Jingle Bells Personal Progress Handout

I know I haven't posted a handout in a while, but this one couldn't wait until after the Christmas Chaos.

Here is a little Personal Progress reminder I made this morning for our girls that is fun to pass along during the Christmas holiday.  I'm hoping the lyrics catch on so they'll be singing this in their heads every time they hear Jingle Bells this season!

Have fun and enjoy!

Faith Value Experience #1

These are for our personal progress basket.  I pulled some rocks from our yard, (I live in Arizona, there are lots of rocks in my yard.), used vinyl lettering to write Prayer on each of the rocks.  I used the vinyl because I can, however, paint pens would work just as well, and if the girls are decorating their own, I would encourage using paint pens. For the bags I found some sticker sheets that had 45 stars on them.  This was enough to cover morning and evening prayers for the entire 3 weeks.  The stickers are under the rocks in the bags.  I also attached a card with the scriptures they have to read and the follow up.  There is a little calendar on the back of the card in case the girls choose to track their daily progress that way.

For the bags I printed conference talks.  I would prefer the girls find their own, but I also like to have everything they need right there.  I pulled from the following talks:

Richard G. Scott, The Transforming Power of Faith and Character, October 2010 Conference
Kevin W. Pearson, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, April 2009 Conference
Richard C. Edgley, Faith - the Choice is Yours, October 2010 Conference
David A. Bednar, Ask in Faith, April 2008 Conference
Henry B. Eyring, A Living Testimony, April 2011 Young Women Broadcast

The cards I used suggested the girls use their stickers and prayer rock to track their progress.  I made some cards without the prayer rock blurb so you can use the card alone with the tracking sheet on the back if you wish.  The cards are designed to print front and back. One stop shopping at it's best!

My favorite part about this value experience is all of this can easily be adapted into an activity night.  It's also one that the girls who have completed this value experience can still participate.

For an activity I would recommend reading the scriptures together in small groups, and watching two of the conference talks together.  This is a great opportunity for those working on their honor bees to lead a small group in the scripture study or lead a discussion group after the videos.  To end the night everyone can make a prayer rock to take home and get started on their goal.  Have fun!

Knowledge Value Experience #3

This is just another value experience reminder for Knowledge #3.  I made it look like an event ticket to go along with the idea that the girls have to go to some sort of performance or museum as part of the experience.  I really think it's important to let the girls know this can be a school performance also.  Some seem to get scared away feeling it has to be something on a larger scale.

These print three to a page.  When my husband saw these he thought it would be more appropriate to have Celestial Admission where the General Admission is.  I have made the change on the PDF, but haven't taken new photos, so in the meantime just know that your Young Women have the new and improved version of the handout and my poor young women don't.

Faith Value Experience #5 Activity Night

This activity was planned in our ward to help the girls work on Faith #5. We had two girls who were working on Virtue #4 because they had finished Faith #5, but I really feel any value that has to do with the atonement or repentance would work.

The girls started by making tiles with pictures of the Savior.  This took about fifteen minutes from start to finish.  I am including the gathering, passing out supplies and finishing the project.  As soon as they were done we introduced the rest of the activity, explaining who would be going where and making sure everyone had their books and their scriptures.

After instructions were given, we showed the Mormon Messages, Lifting Burdens. We used a projector and showed it from the laptop.  The clip is only about 3 and a half minutes long, but it was effective for getting everyone back on track for scripture reading.

The girls then went into groups to help with talking.  At each table they had certain scriptures (or For the Strength of the Youth for the virtue #4 girls) to read.  After they moved through the last table they went to another area to write in their journals. We had everyone read their own scriptures, so they could move to the next table as soon as they finished.  During the scripture reading we had music playing in the background to help keep the reverence.  All the songs we selected had to do with the Savior.

During the activity we had Personal Progress interviews taking place in the corner of the room.  As they set their new goals for the coming month we have the Personal Progress bucket with the little handouts for the various goals available.  This makes it really hard for anyone to come up with an excuse as to why they aren't working on Personal Progress.

For refreshments we had homemade Soft Pretzels.  We are one of those wards that has to do a treat that starts with a "P" for Personal Progress.  We had some with salt and some with cinnamon and sugar.   They were all gone by the time we left, so I take that as a sign they liked them.

Overall I felt like the evening went well and we have received a lot of positive feedback from the girls.  Hopefully this will help you and your girls also!

The tiles were really easy to make.  I purchased these at Lowes for $0.48/each.  The pictures of Christ were printed on an inkjet printer.  When I made the sample I didn't have Modge Podge so I used Elmer's glue.  It worked great so we used that for the activity also.  Remember the pictures are printed with an inkjet so the ink will bleed if it gets too wet. We had the girls apply the glue to the tile, place the picture on the tile and push the air bubbles out from the middle of the picture.  Next, applied a generous amount of glue with strokes moving horizontally to spread the glue evenly, then vertically.  Last, just the girls pressed down on the edges to make sure none of the torn edges were left uncovered.

Crummy Cookie Personal Progress Reminder

This is actually the first Personal Progress reminder I gave our girls.  I used 4" bags that I had on hand from who knows what.  Any clear cello bags will work.  I cut the printed page into fourths.  I did find when I converted to PDF I had to cut about 3/8" off the bottom to keep the bag toppers even.  Have fun!

Good Works Value Experience #2

This was probably one of my favorite handouts to make.  This is a value experience that really the young women need to do on their own, but it can sometimes be put off unless the parents take the lead.  This handout can be combined with a cooking activity, or just something the girls can take to remind them or help motivate them to start on the project.

To make these you need:
The three file downloads
     Album Covers
     Menu Plan
     Shopping List
Yellow Cardstock (thinking about Good Works)
Brag Book
Recipe Cards
Glue

I printed the album covers on white cardstock and the shopping list and menu plan on regular printer paper.  The shopping list was cut in half and the others were cut in quarters.  The yellow cardstock I used to back the album covers was cut to 6" x 4 5/8".  This was the size of the album cover I removed. I glued the Album Covers on the yellow cardstock to fill the opening.

I picked the brag books and recipe cards up from the Dollar Tree.  There were 50 4x6 recipe cards in a package, and I used 17 recipe cards for each book.  The first photo slot is where I placed the Menu Plan, and on the back side I placed the Shopping List folded in half.  All of the other photo slots had one recipe card in the front.  I figure the girls can add more if they want later.  I did use three differently designed recipe cards so they wouldn't feel like they can't add something that looks different.

If you wanted to incorporate this into an activity, the girls could make their own albums and share family recipes.  Whatever you choose - have fun!

Faith Value Experience #4

Here is a booklet I put together for Faith value experience #4.  My printer allows me to print on both sides automatically.  If you don't have a printer that is set up to do so, print one page at a time, loading the paper back in to print on the reverse side.

Cut the paper in half length wise, then fold the pages.  I stapled them in the middle to keep them together.  (Yes, I had to bend the paper a little to get it into a regular stapler.  If you use regular copy paper you can't tell once it's laid flat.) This is small enough for the girls to put in their scriptures to keep with them on the three Sundays they choose to work on this goal.

Again, the link will take you to Scribd.  Please don't panic when you are directed away from my blog.

Integrity Value Experience #6

I love this little handout if for the girls who may need a little jump start in the Personal Progress.  This is such an easy value experience to complete.  All it involves is fasting.  For the girls who really struggle with Personal Progress, this experience doesn't even include journal writing (although if they don't notice it, don't point it out.)

We made little invitations to give to the girls the week before Fast Sunday at our mutual activities.  Nothing too fancy, but just a little reminder.

The envelope is a 6x6 piece of purple (of course) cardstock. The only reason I used this size was because I had some solid purple 12x12 cardstock in my scrapbook supplies.  You can adjust the envelope if you want.  If you have an envelope template you can use that, but I just folded all four of the corners into the middle.

The words are printed six to a page; these are glued on the inside of the envelope.  If you use the pdf file I've linked below, I trimmed 1 inch off the left side of the paper, and cut the squares from there.

Integrity Value Experience 6 Inserts

To make them look a little nicer I wrapped some ribbon around the outside and then sealed them with a round sticker.  The stickers I used were Avery 5293 round labels.  I realize this is not the most commonly used label size, so you could use even another piece of paper, a sticker, anything really to hold it closed.  The ones we are delivering to the girls at the mutual activity are personalized, but the ones we have in the Personal Progress basket have the Value Experience on the sticker to identify it from other integrity handouts.

Fortune Cookies

These weren't the easiest Personal Progress reminder I've made, but these were definitely one of the funnest.  The cookies take a little while to make.  I planned on a few hours for this particular handout.  You could just as easily make an entire batch with the same fortune and place them in a bowl to pass around Young Womens.

The recipe is on my food blog.
Fortune Cookie Recipe.

The tags are printed on plain paper and mounted on black cardstock for support.  The PDF file is below.

I included three cookies in the bag, one said, "Confucius says it is a good day to work on Personal Progress", the second had a quote about the divine nature of Young Women by President Hinckley, and the third contained a random quote from a general authority. You could easily create your own inserts to accommodate whatever you are making the cookies for.

Divine Nature Value Experience #4

Okay, so this one isn't as simple as cutting a page into fourths, but it isn't as hard as it looks either.

This is what it looks like from the front, It's a half sheet of landscape oriented cardstock folded in half to make an envelope.  I glued the top and bottom together so I could add the sacrament prayers inside for the girls to reference.

The back has a two week checklist for the girls to use while following up every day to remember what they are doing for the value experience.

I have also included below a picture of the front, back and the scripture inserts together.  The envelope was printed on cardstock.  I printed the sacrament prayer inserts on plain copy paper, and mounted them on blue cardstock. I then tied a ribbon through just to add a finishing touch. That is definitely all extra cutesy stuff; EXCEPT, you do want to be sure the prayers are either long enough to stick out of the envelope a bit or tie with some sort of ribbon or string so they aren't lost in the envelope.

Again, the link will take you to Scripb for the PDF files.  There are two separate files, one for the envelope and one for the prayers.  The envelopes will print two to a sheet, and the prayers print four sets to a sheet.

Divine Nature Value Experience 3

For Divine Nature Value Experience 3 we made magnets.  The template prints four to a page.  I cut them down and then made magnets for the girls to keep for a reminder while they are working on this experience.

The photo is a little dark because the flash was reflecting off the laminate part of the magnet - sorry!

We have a Xyron, so that is what I used to create the magnet back.  If you don't have access to something with that capability there are other options. Print the handout on cardstock and use the magnet rolls you get at craft stores and attach a piece of the strip to the back of the handout.
A little more expensive on an option is to print the handout and use magnet sheets from an office supply store.

Because the value experience is behavior based for a two week time period, the magnet has 16 day reminders that the young woman can cross off each day.  She can keep the magnet on the fridge at home to remind everyone she is working on this, or a personal magnet board.  At the end of the two weeks there is also a reminder to share what she has learned with a parent or leader.  Hope these are as helpful for another leader as they have been for us.

Again, the link to print the PDF file will take you to scribd.  Don't panic when you're navigated away from the blog. :)

Divine Nature Value Experience 1

This is my first test to see if the PDF upload is working. Here is a little handout we made for Divine Nature value experience #1. This is one of those that's great to do at a mutual night because you can get everything done in one night.  BUT, what do you do with the girls who don't finish, and what about the girls who weren't there.  This is a great handout, with everything right there for the girls to quickly check and be sure they finish before Personal Progress interviews.  This will also be included in our "Things to work on" basket.

They print four to a page, best to use cardstock for stability of the bookmark.

If you would like the PDF version of the file please click the link below.  I use scripd to upload the PDF, so don't be alarmed when you navigate to their website.  It's all good! :)

Personal Progress Reminders

It's really easy in your callings to go overboard, but it's also very easy to avoid doing anything extra.  Like it or not, kids, youth, and even a lot of the adults, enjoy getting a little something every once in a while.  I've been working on some Personal Progress reminders for the Young Women in our ward.

Woohoo!  I can upload the PDFs, so I have included the links below...just a reminder you will be navigated away to scripd to download the PDF documents if  you are interested in copying these.

This is a package of microwave popcorn, one 1/2 sheet of 8 1/2 x 11 cardstock and I printed four of the words to a page.
Wrap the cardstock around the popcorn, tape in the back
Cut the printed saying down to size with a paper trimmer & mount on the cardstock. I must have deleted the file for this one...so sorry I will recreate it soon!

I found the ruler pencils at a dollar bin the beginning of the school year.  I have heard others looking for them for teacher gifts that they sell them at Oriental Trading.  Another suggestion would be to attach the saying to a small ruler instead of a pencil. The handouts were printed on cardstock. We used a standard hole punch to make holes for the pencil.  Be careful not to push the pencil through to quickly or it will rip the carstock.

Inch by Inch Pencil or Ruler Handout

Hot Tamales were on sale at the grocery store which is what inspired this handout.  The saying was printed three to page on 8 1/2 x 11 cardstock.  I used glue dots to hold the candy in place, then folded the edges over to make like an envelope for the candy.  I used tape to hold the back closed figuring the girls will probably try to open them before they're in the parking lot anyway. (We have the 1:00 p.m. block)

Personal Progress is Hot Stuff

And last for today is another pencil. This is just a standard pencil.  These cards were printed six to a sheet and then cut down. Again, I used a hole punch to make holes for the pencils.

I have found if I make several handouts and keep them in bags in the closet I don't have to worry about having time the day I really want something.
